Walking Mums Group: how a club is keeping new mums connected

A walking group bringing together new mums across Greater Manchester is helping mothers to feel less isolated, improving both their physical and mental health.

Becca Cahill founded the club in 2020 as the Covid-19 pandemic meant there was no way to meet new mums and parents at in-person baby groups.

She said: “It was a really tough time to be having a baby.

“At first it was a group of about five of us who started meeting but it soon became clear how many mums needed that connection.

“It’s not just about getting the steps in. When you first have a baby it can be very isolating and meeting up with other people who are on the same journey is absolutley vital.”

Around one in ten mums experience postnatal depression and anxiety. Regular exercise and connection with others has been shown to have a positive effect on people suffering from either.

Each week the Walking Mums Club takes place in several locations, from Deansgate to the Fallowfield loop. Next week’s walks are in Whythenshawe, Levenshulme, Alexandra Park and Debdale Park.

The groups success has led to funding and support from Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM)’s Cycle and Stride Fund.

Richard Nickson, Active Travel Network Director at TfGM, said: “It’s inspiring to hear how the Walking Mums Club is helping women stay active and meet new people in the early stages of motherhood.

“Walking is an enjoyable and accessible way of getting around – whether it’s going for a short stroll near to where you live, exploring nature or part of a longer journey across the Bee Network.”

After the success of these meet-ups, the club has expanded beyond walking putting on a variety of events including a creative motherhood workshop and a walking music club.
