Dog owner called to court after Yorkshire Terrier viciously mauled to death in Spinningfields

By Ben Southworth

A man has been interviewed under caution after a Yorkshire Terrier was mauled to death in Spinningfields earlier this year.

The dog owner has now been summonsed to appear in court for an offence under the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Police issued an image of the owner and dog believed to be responsible for the attack on Yorkshire Terrier Daisy on May 6 which resulted in a large number of calls to police from the public.

Inspector Phil Spurgeon, from the City Centre Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “We received a huge response from the public following this appeal in the media and I would like to thank everyone that contacted us to assist us with this investigation.”

The attack happened in broad daylight and left Daisy’s owner Stephanie Hopwood, 24, from Sandbach, ‘traumatised’.

Daisy was mauled by the dog in front of her owner and sustained fatal injuries; she was put to sleep later that day.

Speaking at the time of the incident Police Constable Gavin Johnson described Daisy’s death as ‘tragic’.
