By Naomi Powell

The sights and sounds of South Asian culture will return to The North this weekend as thousands are expected to gather to celebrate The Manchester Mega Mela Festival.

The much-loved gathering will take place at Platt Fields Park, Rusholme, at 12pm and will host some of the region’s biggest talent on the main stage including musicians Jaz Dhami, Saini Surinder and Nafees.

Infused with authentic spicy Asian food and traditional Hindu clothing and jewellery stalls, the weekend will be jam-packed with exotic delights.

Khairul Alam, one of the event’s organisers, said: “The Mela is a celebration of the cultural diversity which exists here in Manchester.

“We’re proud to host The Mela once again and we welcome people from all cultures and religions to this free event.”

The celebration which attracts over 60,000 visitors each year, has become a key date on the Manchester cultural calendar.

Councillor Rosa Battle, Manchester City Council executive member for culture and leisure, said: “The Mela is enjoyed by thousands of people each year and is a great day out enjoyed by everyone regardless of age, culture or background.

“There’s always a terrific atmosphere and it is a wonderful celebration which brings the entire community together.”
