Prestwich subway attack: Woman left ‘traumatised’ after sexual assault and attempted rape

By Danielle Wainwright

A woman was sexually assaulted and almost raped under a Prestwich subway on Sunday before her attacker was disturbed by a passerby.

The 20-year-old victim had been walking under the subway on Bury New Road near to the junction for the M60 at around 6pm when she was approached by a man.

He then grabbed her and assaulted then sexually assaulted her before he was disturbed by a passerby.

He then fled toward the direction of the footbridge over the bridge with the woman’s large black leather handbag.

Detective Inspector Damian Simpson from GMP’s Serious Sexual Offences Unit said: “This is quite a shocking attack on a young woman that took place early on Sunday evening and I am only thankful her ordeal did not go on any longer as her attacker was disturbed.

“The young victim is traumatised by what has happened to her and we are giving her as much support as we can at this difficult time.

“I know news of this attack will cause great concern in the community, particularly due to the time and location it took place, but I would like to try and offer some reassurance that incidents such as this are extremely rare in the Bury area.”

The man is described as white with facial stubble. He was wearing a beanie hat with stripes around the base and a black shiny bomber jacket. He was between 30 to 40 years of age and of slim build.

Police have put extra patrols in the area and are appealing to any witnesses to come forward

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 1812 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
