The summer of ‘superfast’ broadband: EE announce plans to double 4G mobile internet speeds in Manchester

By Glen Keogh

Manchester is one of just ten cities in the UK who will have access to even faster 4G broadband services by the summer, provider EE announced today.

Mobile users on the network currently have access to average speeds which range between 8Mbps and 12Mbps but these will be given a boost to more than 20Mbps.

This means Mancunians will be able to surf the web much more quickly on their mobiles – despite 4G networks already being up to seven times faster than existing 3G networks.

Using the newly boosted speeds, customers should be able to upload or download pictures in high definition with greater resolution or view and share videos without delay.

Olaf Swantee, EE’s chief executive officer, said the benefits would be brought in for both new and current subscribers.

“We will ensure that the UK remains at the forefront of the digital revolution,” he said.

“Having already pioneered 4G here, we’re now advancing the country’s infrastructure again with a faster,  higher-capacity network, and at no extra cost to our customers.”

The ‘superfast’, double-speed services will be dished out to ten cities where 4G is already in place by the summer.

As well as Manchester, cities included are Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, London and Sheffield.

EE, which was the first company to offer a 4G network in the UK, hopes that customers will be able to receive some of the fastest mobile broadband speeds in the world.
