“Stockport is changing” – Progress on the town’s flourishing new bus interchange

Progress is well underway on Stockport’s major new bus interchange and completion of the project is expected in Spring 2024.

The huge station, which has been developed by both Stockport Council and Transport for Greater Manchester, is expected to bring 300 new apartments, a two-acre town centre park on top of the interchange, and cycle storage facilities.

The redeveloped interchange – which has been under construction for two years – is part of a £1 billion investment being implanted into the town, intended to make Stockport “an even better place to live, work and connect”.

Councillor David Mellor, leader of the Stockport Labour Group, said: “This will be one of the first places people will see when then arrive in Stockport, and for those passing over our famous viaduct, they will see that Stockport is changing and that next time they are passing they should […] see for themselves what we have to offer.”

He added: “I’m proud to have been a part of this amazing project and I can’t wait to show it off when [it] opens in Spring 2024.”

Calls for Stockport to improve its public transport network, specifically by installing a Metrolink station, have persisted for years.

Both the general public and local leaders such as GM mayor Andy Burnham have been vocal about expanding the town’s links to the rest of Greater Manchester.

Asked about whether a Metrolink station might be in Stockport’s future, Councillor Mellor said: “I continue to lobby central government along with GM Mayor Andy Burnham, as Metrolink will be a real game changer in moving people from cars to public transport.”

The transformation of the new interchange recently reached a new milestone on the planting of the park’s first trees.

Foundations for the interchange were laid back in 2014, but were kickstarted in 2018. In March 2019 planning permission was given the go-ahead, with work on the site finally beginning in August 2021.
