A woman’s body was found in a canal in Manchester city centre this morning.

Officers were called to Ducie Street following reports that the body had been seen in the water nearby.

They discovered the woman’s body on arrival at 7.35am.

Detective Inspector Brian Morley from the North Manchester Division said: “At this stage, we do not believe this is suspicious although we still need to establish the full circumstances surrounding her death.”

The woman is described as oriental, between 20 and 30 years old and of slim build.

She had long black hair, blue nail varnish on her right hand and clear nail varnish on her left hand.

Officers are hoping that the public may be able to identify the woman from the detailed descriptions of her clothing.

She wore a grey, fur lined Hollister jacket, white Comme De Garcon t-shirt with a gold design on the front, pink Hollister track suit pants with ‘California’ written on the left leg, black Rayban sunglasses and a marble effect Jade band on her left wrist.

DI Morley added: “I would ask anyone who may have seen a woman near to the canal bank within the city centre either last night or earlier this morning to come forward.

“You may also recognise the description of the woman or the clothes that she was wearing.  If you do, please contact us as we are trying to identify who she is and make any next of kin aware.”

Anyone with information should phone police on 0161 856 3221, or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
