Bingo hall shooting: Manchester mum and son in ‘targeted’ attack in Harpurhey

By Tim Hyde

A shooting outside a north Manchester bingo hall yesterday has left a mother and her son injured in hospital.

The pair were climbing into a vehicle when they were shot in what police believe to be a targeted incident at around 7.15pm.

They suffered non-fatal wounds in a shooting outside Gala Bingo at Harpurhey shopping precinct and then proceeded on foot to the nearest hospital – where staff phoned police.

Detective Superintendent Alex Millet said: “This appears to be a targeted incident which could have had even more dire consequences. Thankfully it doesn’t look like either are too seriously injured, but we’ll know more tomorrow.”

The incident occurred after a 56-year-old woman arranged for her son to pick her up and when he arrived in his Audi the pair were blocked in by a black car.

Two men then got out from the black vehicle and a number of shots were fired at the Audi, one hitting the son in the wrist and another hitting his mother on her elbow.

The 22-year-old son managed to force his way out of the car park and drive off before abandoning his car on Woodville Terrace. The car has now been recovered by police.

Neither of the victims are believed to have sustained life-threatening injuries and are being treated in hospital.

“We believe the black car was driven by two white men and it’s from that car that the shots were fired,” added Detective Millet.

“I want to reassure people that we have had armed response officers to the scene and are now investigating. The injured pair then walked to a hospital to be treated for injuries.”

Anyone with information is asked to Police on 0161 856 4505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
