Manchester tram death: Whitefield man, 48, killed after being dragged under Metrolink named

A pedestrian who was killed after being dragged under a Metrolink tram has been identified as a 48-year-old man from Whitefield.

Dave Ball was struck by the Metrolink tram outside Debenhams on Market Street on Saturday evening.

He was pronounced dead shortly after emergency services arrived on the scene.

Police quickly cordoned off the scene and immediately launched an investigation.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: “At 6.15pm a road traffic collision occurred between a tram and a pedestrian outside Debenhams.

“Police, fire and ambulance all attended the scene but unfortunately the man died of his injuries. We are now investigating the cause of the accident and as a result the immediate area has been sealed off.

Twitter users have taken to the social network to offer their condolences for the 48-year-old man.

LucasWood2011said: “Horrible what’s happened in town today with the metrolink, RIP.”

RauhlWithMahone said: “Oh my God i can’t believe this, walking on this street won’t be the same.”

Market Street and High Street were closed for several hours after the incident and caused severe delays to Metrolink services coming through the city.

The accident also caused travel chaos as thousands of Manchester United fans were leaving Old Trafford following their match against Swansea.

The Metrolink has now resumed normal service.
