The ‘almost-millionaires’: Would you let a lottery win go unclaimed?

When we play the lottery, none of us really imagine that this particular draw will be the time we hit the jackpot.

You have a go, sure, but do you really ever think it’ll be you making newspaper headlines with your win? Yet as we’ve seen time and again, it happens to ordinary people all the time.

But what about those people who let their lottery win go unclaimed?

The last time a million-pound National Lottery win went unclaimed in Manchester was back in December 2012, but thankfully, it didn’t take too long for someone to come forward.

The £1,050,547 win was finally claimed in January 2013 with the winner deciding to remain anonymous.

However, if the winner had purchased their ticket online, they would have known about their win straightaway as when you buy lotto tickets online, you receive automatic alerts via email or SMS if you have a win.

And if you’re out and about when the Euro results Friday come in, for example, you can always check them online too.

Buying online lotto tickets is by far the most sensible option as there’s no danger of losing that little slip of paper that could stand between you being able to hand in your notice and live a life of luxury – or not.

Imagine the anguish of seeing your numbers come up and then not being able to find the ticket!

The other advantage of playing online is that you can buy tickets for a number of different lottos including international lotteries such as Euromillions, MegaMillions and Powerball.

And if you happened to win one of the US lottos, as a non-US citizen you’d actually take home a lot more than a US citizen would, as resident prize winners are heavily taxed within the States.

As with most things in life today, buying lotto tickets is much less hassle now you can do it online.
