Tameside man to appear in court suspected of plying teenager with alcohol and subjecting her to rape

By Danielle Wainwright

A man suspected of plying a vulnerable teenager with alcohol and raping her in his Hyde home is due to appear in court today after handing himself in to the police.

William Lenihan, 30, of Mottram Road was arrested last night after the alleged attack of a 15-year-old girl on July 26 between 4.15pm and 9.15pm.

Lenihan is alleged to have persuaded the young girl to go back to his bedsit with him after he had seen her walking near a motorway bridge that crosses the M67.

They ended up in conversation and Lenihan is accused of taking her to his home where he allegedly plied her with alcohol and subjected her to a terrifying rape ordeal.

Police would now like to thank the public for their response to the witness appeal.

Detective Inspector Damian Simpson, from GMP’s serious sexual offences unit, said: “The victim in this case is being helped by specially trained officers and being fully supported.”

He will appear at Tameside Magistrates Court this morning.
