Wild Tales: Salford legend Graham Nash reveals sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll in warts and all autobiography

By Tom Dyson

Graham Nash has brought his revealing autobiography to the shelves of book shops across the UK yet Manchester was fortunate enough to have him in person at Waterstones on Sunday.

Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life is an open and honest account of Nash’s life and the title sums up the lifestyle that he and many other classic rock musicians had in the 60s and 70s.

Sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll are only a few of the tales which encapsulate a long and extraordinary life for the Salford-based singer.

From The Hollies to Crosby, Stills and Nash, the 71-year-old has lived and breathed music, taking an active part in pleasing the many fans who have delved into the archives of his vast array of songs.

Nash told MM: “The book covers everything, all of my life. I start off with an interesting musical moment which was the first time me, David and Stephen ever sang together, and then I go backwards, I start from the beginning.”

After more than 50 years of singing and song writing, MM asked Nash why this as good a time as any to pen his revealing life story.

Nash said: “I actually did it for my kids and my granddaughter. She’s only one year old so I wanted her to know who her grandfather was. My kids kind of know who I am because they’ve been with me all their lives.”

Amongst his musical credentials is a comparative list of honours and achievements which include entrances in both the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Songwriter’s Hall of Fame, political activism and photography.

Even one of his trademarks is performing bare foot. Nash explained: “I can feel the band better through my feet. I can feel the bass and the kick drum vibrating on the stage so it keeps me locked in the group as we’re playing.”

Whether you were lucky enough to enjoy seeing him at Woodstock or you are a mere youngster with an ear for great music and just starting to appreciate this magical era, then this book is a must-read for anyone wanting to step back in time and read about the highs, lows and wild tales of a musical legend.
