Engineering firm to appear in court after Didsbury employee crushed to death by overhead crane

By Danielle Wainwright

An engineering firm is due to appear in court tomorrow after a Didsbury employee was crushed to death between a platform and overhead crane in 2011.

Liam O’Neill, 51, died in hospital seven days after the incident as he was replacing a crane’s control cable on March 12.

Preston-based company Assystem UK Ltd is being prosecuted by The Health and Safety Executive for breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 at its plant on Club Street Bamber Bridge.

The company, part of Assystem International, is accused of failing to ensure the safety of its employees and will appear at Preston Magistrates Court tomorrow for the first hearing.
