Battle of the soaps: Coronation Street edge out Emmerdale in Manchester charity netball match

By Tim Hyde

The Rovers Return was most likely awash with celebratory drinks on Sunday as stars from Coronation Street outwitted their Emmerdale rivals in a battle on the netball court.

The two popular soaps duked it out in honour of ITV’s Text Santa and were joined by local netball stars from the Manchester Thunder and Yorkshire Jets who also competed in the closely contested match.

Event sponsors Midshire were proud to help promote the event which split proceedings between six worthy charities.

Julian Stafford, Midshire’s Managing Director, said: “The effort put in by both Manchester Thunder and Yorkshire Jets to pull this event off and raise such a large sum is truly inspiring. Hopefully we can make it an annual event.

“To see all the Stars give up so much of their time to train for the event was amazing.

“It was great for Midshire to be involved in such a positive event.”

The event hosted, which was hosted in Manchester, was organised by Corrie’s Samia Ghadie who was undoubtedly thrilled to end up on the winning side.

Team Corrie nudged out their opponents in a 33-28 win which went down to the wire.

The variety of charities supported by Text Santa rang from Age UK, Barnardo’s, BeatBullying, British Heart Foundation, Clic Sargent and Help the Hospices.

The appeal has raised nearly £10 million for charities since it started in 2011 through various fundraising events.
