Titanic submersible implosion: A submarine, carrying five tourists, went missing whilst conducting its maiden voyage to the original shipwreck. After a relentless search and rescue effort, the sub’s 96 hours of breathable air ran out and all on board sadly passed away.
Wagner Group rebellion: A period of increased tensions between the Russian Ministry of Defence and the Wagner Group leader Yevgeny Prigozhin led to a rebellion with an armoured column of Wagner troops advancing towards Moscow. Belarusian president Alexander Lukashenko brokered a settlement and Wagner forces turned around. Prigozhin died exactly two months later in a plane crash.
Boris Johnson found to have misled parliament: Former Prime Minister was found guilty of deliberately misleading parliament over Partygate and Johnson resigned after seeing the findings.
Glastonbury festival: Elton John stole the show as Glastonbury returned for the second year after covid. The legendary pop star joined Arctic Monkeys, Guns N’ Roses and Lizzo in what was the 53rd year of the event.
Man City win FA cup and Champions league: Man City completed the treble in one of the greatest seasons in English football history. On the back of their Premier League title the Citizens beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final and Inter Milan in the Champions League final in Istanbul.
Novak Djokovic wins French Open: The Serbian tennis star broke the all-time men’s major record after winning at Roland Garros in a straight set win over Norwegian Casper Rudd. It was his third French Open title and surpassed the record previously held by Rafael Nadal.
Stockport pyramid to become curry house: After years of being derelict the legendary feature just off the A6 was confirmed to be converted into a restaurant and banqueting hall. Restaurant chain Royal Nawaab were announced to take over the building with the Indian due to open in the summer of 2024.
