Manchester venue Gorilla temporarily closed after bailiff notice

Iconic music venue and restaurant Gorilla is temporarily closed, and pop band Teleman’s concert this Saturday has been moved to Manchester Academy 2.

A forfeiture notice was posted to Gorilla’s doors on Whitworth Street on April 18 by bailiffs on behalf of the venue’s landlords, Network Rail.

Gorilla – which has hosted James Marriott, The Covasettes, Kid Kapichi, and The 1975 this year – posted a statement on April 21 which said: “Due to unforeseen circumstances we are temporarily closed.

“If you have a food and drink booking with us this weekend our reservations team will be in touch to reschedule or find you somewhere else to party!

“If you have tickets for a club or live event over the weekend, your ticket agent will update you if there are any changes.”

The exact reason for the forfeiture notice has not been shared by Gorilla, but this type of notice is served by landlords when a commercial tenant has broken the conditions of their lease in some way.

The notice states the locks of the property have been changed, and that any attempt to gain entry will “result in criminal/civil proceedings being taken”.

Customers and concert-goers have expressed disappointment and confusion at the venue’s sudden closure.

Gorilla has not yet responded to Mancunian Matters’ request for comment.
