Manchester police killer Dale Cregan on hunger strike after complaining of isolation and living too far from family

By Danielle Wainwright

One-eyed killer Dale Cregan, who slayed policewomen Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone as well as father and son David and Mark Short, has gone on hunger strike after complaining that he is too far from his family and does not like being segregated from other inmates.

Cregan began his protest while serving his whole life sentence at HMP Full Sutton in York in the hopes that he will be moved to Strangeways to be closer to Droylsden where his family lives.

The police killer, who lives in isolation to protect him from an underworld bounty of £20,000 to anyone who damages his other eye, also wants to live among other inmates.

Jonathan Reynolds, MP for Stalybridge and Hyde, has expressed his anger at the murderer’s protests and said: “Dale Cregan deserves to spend the rest of his life in prison and how he is held is a matter for the prison authorities.

“He is clearly proud of the reputation he has gained and this is now one of the few ways he has of getting the attention that he craves.

“Hopefully he will be dealt with accordingly and can get right back to serving his sentence in whichever way the authorities see fit.”

A Prison Service spokesman refused to comment on Cregan’s status or condition, but told PA: “We take food refusal extremely seriously.

“If a prisoner chooses to refuse food for any reason, the Prison Service works with healthcare staff to monitor their physical and mental health.

“Prisoners who are considered mentally capable are entitled to refuse health interventions, provided they fully understand the consequences of their decision.”

Cregan was sentenced at Preston Crown Court on June 13 after gunning down Mark and David Short in August last year.

A manhunt was then launched, but Cregan then lured police officers Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone to their deaths in a gun and grenade attack last August.
