Family pay tribute to grieving widower stabbed to death in Leigh robbery as ‘dedicated family man’

A 62-year-old man who was subjected to a brutal stabbing attack in his Leigh home died on Friday in hospital after succumbing to his injuries.

Steve Butterworth was stabbed several times after a man knocked on his door. The intruder then forced his way into the home and stole a number of items including Mr Butterworth’s wallet and fled leaving the man fighting for his life on the ground.

Mr Butterworth was taken to the Manchester Royal Infirmary where he sadly died from four stab wounds leaving his family devastated.

In a statement, Mr Butterworth’s family said: “Steve was a gentle and caring dad, granddad, brother and uncle. He was a dedicated family man who was dearly loved by all.

“He was also a keen fisherman and friendly neighbour. Sadly Steve recently became a widower when his wife of 36 years died unexpectedly and whilst grieving and struggling to come to terms with his loss.”

The family man was attacked around 5.30pm on August 25 at his house on Diamond Street.

Detective Chief Inspector Howard Millington, who is leading the investigation, said: “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the relatives and friends of Mr Butterworth who are clearly devastated by his death.

“This in now a murder investigation and although someone has been charged with offences in relation to this matter we are still keen to hear from anyone who may have any information about the incident.”
