MM’s Year in Review: December 2023

Andre Braugher passed away. Brooklyn Nine-Nine star passed away at the age of 61. The actor – who played Captain Holt – was diagnosed with lung cancer a few months ago and died from complications relating to the illness.

Asylum Bill passes Second Reading. After the UK Supreme Court ruled the Rwanda plan to be ‘unlawful’, the bill was passed through with a majority of 44. The Bill will be amended for the third and final reading to allow people to submit individual cases to appeal the decision and give assurances that asylum seekers will not be sent back to the states that they are fleeing from.

Bibby Stockholm asylum seeker commits suicide. An Albanian asylum seeker, Leonard Farruku, committed suicide on the barge where there is an estimated 300 people on board. It was said that Farruku was in distress and he reported his mental health problems to staff a day before his passing.

Ian Wright steps down. The former Arsenal and England forward announced that he is leaving Match of the Day at the end of the Premier League season. Wright made his debut in 1997 and started his regular appearances in 2002.

Saudi Arabia sports takeover. A boxing event, promoted as ‘The Day of Reckoning’ and the Fifa Club World Cup are taking place in Saudi over the next couple of weeks. Heavyweights like Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder and teams like Manchester City will be vying to win in the Middle East. There are concerns over the events due to Saudi Arabia’s poor human rights records and it being portrayed as a sports washing attempt.

Chanel comes to Manchester. The French fashion house took over the Northern Quarter for their Métiers D’Art Show 2023/2024. Hugh Grant and Margot Robbie were among many celebrities that were in attendance.
