Salford to play host to BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards will take place at Salford’s Media City this year.

Now in its 69th year, the awards celebrate the sporting achievements which have taken place throughout the year.

Football legend Gary Lineker will present the awards lives on BBC One and iPlayer on December 21 alongside Claire Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott.

This year we have seen an amazing year for sport from the England Lionesses winning the Euros to the record number of medals at the Commonwealth Games.

This year the show has moved from its usual Sunday night slot to Wednesday evening – as telly bosses hope England might make it to the World Cup final in Qatar.

Viewers are also encouraged to get involved by voting for who they think should be the sports personality of the year and unsung hero.

Nominations for the Unsung Hero award will open on Friday 30 September and viewers can vote online at www.bbc.co.uk/unsunghero

The award celebrates volunteers who make a positive impact on their community by supporting grassroots sports.

Last year’s winner was British tennis star Emma Raducanu MBE, who was praised for being the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade at Wimbledon in 1977.

The nominees for this year’s winner has not yet been announced but the winning odds are England football stars Beth Mead and Harry Kane.

Previous winners have included HRH Princess Anne and figure skaters Torvill and Dean.
