Way to go, Jose: Baxter lands players’ player of the year at Oldham Athletic’s end-of-season awards

By Matthew Lees

Oldham Athletic top-scorer Jose Baxter scooped three gongs at the club’s end-of-season awards.

The 21-year-old won the players’ player of the year, Polyflor Boundary Blues’ player of the season and the NTC Oldham Ltd goal of the season for netting against Leyton Orient at Boundary Park.

The awards mark a successful season for Baxter – having turned down a contract at Everton for regular first team football – but he missed out on Talking Point player of the season award.

The prize, voted for by fans, was won by midfielder Lee Croft who narrowly beat Baxter and Jean-Yves M’voto.

Croft, who recently admitted he would be happy to stay at Boundary Park, only missed one game of the season.

Frenchman M’voto did not go home empty handed though as he won two awards, being named player of the season by both Trust Oldham and Oldham Athletic Community Trust.

Defensive partner James Tarkowski won players’ young player of the year while the maiden award for outstanding contribution went to Wendy Noble and Martin Vose from Oldham Athletic Community Trust.

After a busy season – part of which he became manager in a caretaker capacity – youth coach Tony Philliskirk was rewarded with the Oldham Athletic employee of the season prize.

The evening also saw the launch of Latics’ new home shirt for the 2013/14 season which carries a new sponsor.

Blacks, the JD Sports-owned outdoor specialists, will have their logo across the kit – on sale on May 31 – which returns to Oldham’s traditional royal blue colours.
