‘Learning all the time’: Sochi Olympian Wilson scoops rugby sevens player of the tournament prize

She may have only taken up rugby two years ago but Rebekah Wilson has put no limit on her ambitions after starring for the Northern Lights in their Secure Trading 24/Sevens triumph.

Wilson, from Altrincham, burst onto the rugby scene a little over three years after competing in the Winter Olympics for Great Britain in Sochi.

The 26-year-old was part of the two-woman bobsleigh team that finished 12th in Russia and after quitting the sport, she has used her searing pace to good effect in the rugby sevens.

The winger took home player of the tournament from The Rec after a phenomenal solo try in the final against Gloucester-Hartpury, and the humble star admits she was surprised by the award.

The Waterloo Ladies player said: “I’m very surprised, it’s been a brilliant tournament, the event has been fantastic.

“We’ve come down here and played some really tough opposition and played our hearts out every single game and to come away from the tournament with the win is absolutely brilliant.

“First and foremost I want to keep learning and keep enjoying what I’m doing. I’ve only been playing the sport two-and-a-half years so I’m learning all the time. Sevens is a different game too. So it’s just about taking it step-by-step and see where I can go with it.”

Originally starting life as a sprinter, Wilson has found her love for sport once again in rugby, but admits it was a dream to represent Team GB at an Olympics.

She said: “I transferred from bobsleigh which was based in Bath and I always used to drive past The Rec and not know what was going on. But I wanted to give it a go so I came down and I started playing and I love it.

“I used to be a sprinter but it’s now about getting the fitness as well. I loved my time at the Olympics, it was a surreal experience but on the whole it was amazing.

“I always said I wanted to go to an Olympic Games when I was younger, so to have done that was amazing.

“But after that things changed and I wanted to find the love I had for sport again and I landed on rugby.

“Since then I’ve just really enjoyed my time in the game and want to continue growing.”
