Real challenge: Madrid stars Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo line-up for Manchester United charity match

By Chris Bailey

Real Madrid superstars Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo will turn back time after the pair confirmed their place for a Manchester United charity match in June.

In a star-studded game on June 2, billed ‘The Legends Are Back’, the two will play alongside former Madrid favourites such as Fernando Redondo, Hierro, and ex-Liverpool winger Steve McManaman.

The United side contain greats of their own – including Teddy Sheringham, Jaap Stam, Andy Cole and Denis Irwin – while midfield maestro Bryan Robson will take the managerial reins.

“The game is certainly going to be a crowd pleaser,” said Robson.

“Judging by the players that Real Madrid are bringing to Old Trafford, I’d say they are taking it very seriously, but so are we!”

This year’s edition is a follow-on from 2012’s first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, in which Madrid narrowly edged United 3-2 – Figo and Sheringham both finding the net.

But the feast of football’s main aim is to fund-raise for the Manchester United Foundation, an initiative designed to work with the most disadvantaged people across Greater Manchester.

“They narrowly beat us last year and we are all determined to make a comeback at Old Trafford but, above all else, we want to put on a great show for all the fans,” added Robson.

“The work the Manchester United Foundation does in the community is really important to us and it’ll be a great day to raise funds and highlight its achievements.”
