Listen: Sportswashing and Newcastle United

Sportswashing is a relatively new term but its concept dates back almost a century.

It is the idea that a business, corporation or nation state can use a sport to improve their reputation.

2022 could be the biggest year for sportswashing in living memory.

However, 2021 saw Newcastle United being taken over by a Saudi Arabia-backed consortium which sparked a huge debate on the sportswashing issue.

Should a state like Saudi Arabia, well known for its poor human right record, be allowed to buy one of England’s football clubs?

MM spoke to Kathryn Fletcher, a member of Manchester Amnesty, and Newcastle United fan Harvey Simpson about their thoughts on the issue.
