No Way-ne, José! Manchester United reject second bid from Chelsea for want-away striker Rooney

By Colin Rhodes

Manchester United rejected a second bid from Chelsea for want-away striker Wayne Rooney last night.

The Blues have upped their bid from £20million to one believed to be between £25-£30million.

Rooney, who is believed to have expressed his desire to leave Old Trafford to United boss David Moyes, is expected to submit a formal transfer request this week.

The 27-year-old has spent nine years at Old Trafford following his arrival from Everton for £25.6million.

Yet he’s faced frustration at playing second fiddle to Robin Van Persie; a situation which Moyes has indicated is likely to continue next season.

However, the new United boss is unlikely to allow Rooney to leave unless he is able to strengthen his squad. His very public pursuit of Cesc Fabregas and Leighton Baines has been unsuccessful so far.

With the new season less than two-weeks away, Moyes will want the matter settled quickly so that it does not begin to impact on United’s pre-season preparations.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, who has made it clear that Rooney is his main summer transfer target, is likely to return with a third bid.

The striker is believed to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge.
