‘The only way is down’: Nemanja Vidic doesn’t understand Wayne Rooney’s desire to leave Manchester United

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester United’s commanding skipper Nemanja Vidic is puzzled by reports that Wayne Rooney wants to leave ‘the biggest club in the world’.

Rooney is at the centre of this summer’s most protracted transfer saga amidst speculation that he is trying to force a move to title rivals Chelsea.

However, Vidic believes that Rooney is already at the best club in the world and leaving makes no sense.

“There’s so much speculation, so much talk about whether he’ll leave or stay,” Vidic told press after the Community Shield.

“He’s at the best club in the world. I believe Man United is the biggest club in the world and I think there’s no point to go anywhere.”

Vidic knows how it feels to be the centre of transfer attention after persistent rumours in recent years insisted he was on the verge of leaving Old Trafford.

“I have to say the last four years I was in that position as well. People were talking about me leaving the club,” he said.

“But I’m still here and I’m enjoying playing for this club. Nothing has changed.”
