‘We’re the ones to watch’: Van Persie and Giggs scoff at claims Manchester United are only third favourites for title

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester United star Robin van Persie looked baffled after the club’s Community Shield win as he was asked about the club being third favourites for the Premier League title.

The Dutchman fired United to victory over Wigan Athletic with two goals – the first a sumptuous header of the highest order.

However, despite the Reds winning comfortably at Wembley the bookies believe Manchester City and Chelsea are better positioned to win the league this season.

“We are the champions and based on that we are clear favourites,” van Persie said defiantly in his post-match interview.

“I believe in this team and I believe that we will compete again until the end.”

This sentiment was echoed by United veteran Ryan Giggs who remained stoic when quizzed about the club’s lack of activity in the transfer market.

“The quality is in the squad, we showed that last year. Now we have to show it again,” he said.

“We will just have to see how it goes [with transfers] but we are quite happy with the players in our dressing room.

“We won the league with those players so we are looking forward to the start of the season.

Giggs, who is entering his 24th season with the club, believes the players are not concerned by transfer speculation and will continue to do their jobs.

“If we sign someone – great. Of not we will just get on with it,” he said.
