Tactical nous: Darren Fletcher praises ‘subtle change’ by David Moyes as Manchester United end slump

Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher praised the tactics of his manager in the 2-0 win over Swansea at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United ended a run of three straight defeats by beating the Welsh side with second-half goals from Antonio Valencia and Danny Welbeck.

Fletcher believes the tactical change made by David Moyes to switch Shinji Kagawa and Adnan Januzaj made the difference.

“He felt we could get down the left and made a subtle change by moving Adnan out there and Shinji in behind the striker,” Fletcher told MUTV.

“He also told us to raise our tempo, press a little bit quicker in their half and not let them get into their rhythm of passing the ball.”

It was another sluggish first half by United, leading to frustration inside Old Trafford.

They were much improved after the break and went ahead thanks to Valencia’s strike two minutes after half time.

Welbeck doubled the United advantage with his ninth goal of the season and the striker is hopeful his side can kick on from here.

“We’ve set a platform now and really want to build on that and gather some momentum,” Welbeck told MUTV.

“The next match is most important now. That’s what you’ve got to do, take it one game at a time.”

United face a tough test next weekend, with a trip to in-form old rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
