Five-goal Shelton Payne puts Trafford FC into FA Cup second qualifying round earning Robbie Savage praise

By Josh Nicholls

Trafford FC winger Shelton Payne scored all five goals in their 5-1 demolition of Droylsden in the FA Cup first qualifying round on Saturday, earning the praise of former Wales midfielder Robbie Savage.

Trafford had lost five games in a row prior to the cup clash with local and divisional rivals Droylsden, but Trafford exorcised their league demons in style as Payne completed his hat-trick within an hour.

The winger, a summer recruit from Barrow, added two more before the final whistle to etch his name into Trafford folklore as the visitors ran riot at Droylsden’s Butcher’s Arms ground.

Savage, who has over a million Twitter followers, was quick to acknowledge the Evo Stick Northern Premier League side’s victory and their hero Payne as he presented football phone-in 606, tweeting: ‘Our #nonleagueteamoftheday is @fctrafford 5-1 win at Droylsden. Shelton Payne with all five goals!’

Upon hearing the news, the travelling Trafford fans sang Savage’s name in the Droylsden clubhouse as they toasted the cup success.

Payne and his compatriots will be joined in the second qualifying round by Skrill North sides Altrincham and Stockport County, both of whom failed to win on league duty this weekend.

Altrincham were 2-0 up after 21 minutes against winless Oxford City but surrendered the lead to draw 2-2, while Stockport recovered from conceding in the second minute to draw 1-1 with Leamington, former Everton striker Phil Jevons on the score sheet for the third time in two games.

Curzon Ashton are also in the hat for the cup second qualifying round after a 4-2 win at Marine. However FC United of Manchester’s dreams of reaching the first round proper were ended by Chorley as defender Tom Davies was sent off in a home 1-0 defeat.
