Edinson Cavani dashes Manchester City’s transfer hopes by admitting Real Madrid would be ‘dream’ move

By John McDougall

Manchester City’s pursuit of Uruguayan sharpshooter Edinson Cavani appears to have taken a major blow as the striker has revealed Real Madrid would be a dream move.

The 26-year-old Napoli striker looks set to leave Italy this summer with moves to the Etihad Stadium, the Bernabeu and Chelsea all speculated destinations.

And although the Uruguay frontman – currently on Confederations Cup duty – admits nothing is official yet, Los Blancos are uppermost in his thoughts.

“I am very calm about my future. Madrid are a great club and every player dreams of playing there,” Cavani told Spanish radio station Cadena COPE.

“I am a Napoli player for now, though, and I am focused on the Confederations Cup. It is not only up to me what the clubs decide. There are other factors that must be taken into account.

“There’s a lot of talk about Madrid’s interest, so we will see what happens. Nobody has said anything officially.”

Cavani ended last season as Serie A top scorer after scoring 29 goals at the Stadio San Paolo as Napoli finished runners-up to champions Juventus.

His release clause in his current contract – which runs until June 2017 – is believed to be around £53million.

New City manager Manuel Pellegrini is still looking for his first summer signing, after Spanish winger Jesus Navas and Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho arrived before his appointment.
