FA Cup: Blackburn Rovers v Wrexham AFC winner to play big Premier League side in Fifth Round

Sky Bet Championship club Blackburn Rovers host high-flying League Two side Wrexham AFC in the FA Cup Fourth Round tonight, and both teams have already discovered their opponents should they progress from Ewood Park.

The Welsh visitors, famously owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are again living the FA Cup dream run after last year’s success.

The Red Dragons upset another second-tier side in Coventry City to reach the same stage during the 2022/23 term, before being knocked out by current Premier League strugglers Sheffield United in a 3-1 replay defeat.

Victory for Wrexham in front of the BBC cameras this evening would set up a mouth-watering Fifth Round tie at the Racecourse Ground against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United.

The Magpies reached the last 16 of the famous tournament after a 2-0 win over Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby in the Third Round, which was followed up by another 2-0 victory away to Fulham on Saturday.

Around 7000 Wrexham supporters are set to attend the match, with manager Phil Parkinson expecting such a strong following to buoy his side’s efforts.

Parkinson told the club’s website: “We have had some really tough games but got to this stage and what a great opportunity for us to go to Ewood Park with 7,000 fans behind us.

“What a great occasion that will be for our players and our supporters to be part of that.

“It is a game to really look forward to and like we have done in the cup before, it is about going there and giving a good account of ourselves.”

Jon Dahl Tomasson’s Rovers, who are presently in 18th place, will be hoping to quash such ambitions tonight but should expect a tough challenge from the second-placed visitors – who are fighting for back-to-back promotion.

Kick-off is scheduled to be at 19:30 GMT and those wanting to watch the match can do so via BBC One Wales or on the BBC Sport website and app.
