Manchester United tops the Instagram tables as City comes in second

Manchester United is the most followed Premier League team on Instagram — with more than 63 million followers, according to a new study from gaming site 6takarakuji.com.

Manchester City came second place with 50.2 million followers, and Liverpool came in third with just under 44 million.

The rankings change slightly when it comes to average likes received per post — although Manchester United is again well in the lead, with an average of 276,600 likes per post.

Chelsea comes second with an average of 225,700 likes per post, despite having the fourth amount of followers (41.5million).

Second most followed team Manchester City meanwhile receive an average of only 141,200 likes per post — fifth place!

The study produced some surprising results. For instance, top-placed Man United has 2,261% more followers than tenth-place Newcastle United.

And Burnley Football Club placed seventeenth for number of Instagram followers — 692,000, from a town of 95,000 people.

Sayaka Yamamoto, content manager of 6takarakuji, a Japanese gaming website, said: “The Premier League is the biggest league in the world, so it’s interesting to see which teams have the biggest following on Instagram, as football fans are renowned for being very loyal and passionate to their club.

“It’s amazing to see that the 20 teams in the league have more than 200 million followers combined.”
