‘Send me back!’ Manchester United’s all-action youngster Phil Jones sees his future in defence

By Marios Papaloizou

Despite recent expeditions in the Manchester United midfield, Phil Jones sees his long term future in defence.

The 21-year-old England international has been tipped as a future captain for both club and country and United showed faith in his talent by spending big to acquire his services in 2011.

The youngster was bought as a central defender but, with holes appearing in United’s midfield, he was asked to step in and play in the middle of the park.

Having performed well in the role it had been speculated that Jones would permanently transition into a midfield role – yet the player disagrees.

“I have said from day one I see myself as a centre-back,” Jones told PA Sport.

However, although the young star wants to play in defence he is more than willing to help out his team wherever he is needed.

“If I am asked to play in midfield or at right-back I am happy to do so,” he said.

“As long as I am in the team, it doesn’t matter whether I am in goal.”

“Of course, towards the middle and end of my career I will want to start cementing a place in a certain position but at the moment I am happy.”

Sir Alex Ferguson stated several times that he saw Jones’ future in defence and new boss David Moyes has reiterated that stance.

Speaking about Moyes, Jones said: “I am more than happy the new manager has come in.

“He is a great manager. We all know what he has done at Everton. I am sure he will do well for Manchester United as well.”

The change in management has brought a new intensity to preparations with the United squad all eager to cement their place in Moyes’ plans.

“The training has been as sharp as nails. There is that willingness to impress,” Jones said.

“That is the case with all the players, not just myself. Every training session has been very competitive.”
