Future bright for Oldham Athletic: Youngsters excite boss Lee Johnson as League One campaign finishes

By Matthew Lees

Lee Johnson was left purring after his inexperienced side hit back to claim a share of the spoils and finish the season with a point against Leyton Orient.

Jimmy Smith gave Orient the lead after ten minutes but Kirk Millar’s first senior goal 50 seconds after the break secured a point at The Matchroom Stadium.

Latics’ squad contained six home-grown players but despite their lack of first team action, Johnson was pleased with their performance.

“I was delighted when you see the inexperience in our side and the experience in their team,” said the 31-year-old.

“I asked for a reaction after the defeat at Shrewsbury in midweek, and certainly got it. I thought we were really good and I enjoyed watching us.

“I think we deserved the draw on the balance of play and I would say we created the better chances.

“If we can upgrade and add the quality around them then we have a bright future.”

Oldham made five changes to the side that lost to Shrewsbury Town with 16-year-old Jack Truelove – a first-year scholar – coming off the bench after 79 minutes.

Second-year scholar Danny Gosset, 18, made his full debut in midfield after doing well as a sub against Shrewsbury and earned praise from his manager.

“I thought he was fantastic because he is a lad who has come from nowhere,” added Johnson.

“Danny is a good player and he has to transfer that to men’s football which he did. What better way for him to learn than be chucked in at the deep end and play 80 minutes.”

“There is a lot to be positive about and you can see that some of the young players coming through can compete at this level.”

The result means Athletic finish a hectic campaign in 19th place having amassed 51 points, three clear of the relegation zone.

Meanwhile, Doncaster Rovers’ promotion from League One as champions could net Oldham a cash windfall as former captain Dean Furman is on loan at the Keepmoat Stadium.
