Youth given chance at Oldham Athletic as boss Lee Johnson hands out three new professional deals

By Matthew Lees

After tying youngster David Mellor’s down to a long-term deal at Boundary Park, two more youngsters have signed professional contracts with Oldham Athletic.

Teenagers Chris Sutherland and Joe Cooper were rewarded with a first professional contract after completing a two-year scholarship and have now agreed terms.

Winger Sutherland made his debut in September against Notts County and went onto make ten first-team appearances, which included one start.

Defender Cooper, who was given a squad number under Paul Dickov, had to wait until the penultimate game of the season against Shrewsbury Town to make his debut.

The news comes on the back of 19-year-old Mellor signing a one-year contract for the 2013/14 season.

Mellor featured heavily under Lee Johnson after previously being overlooked under Dickov despite scoring on his first-team debut back in August 2011.

Latics are still waiting on other trainees Danny Gossett and Luke Simpson to commit to professional contracts.

Meanwhile, the weekend is expected to be busy at Boundary Park as the new home kit will be officially launched on the same day of the discounted season-ticket deadline.

The new royal blue kit, sponsored by Blacks, will go on sale in the club shop and has more than 400 pre-orders.
