Police are appealing for witnesses after a robbery at a jewellery shop in the city centre yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred At around 2.50pm, when two men riding a lime green motorcycle approached Arthur Kay and Brothers Jewellers on Market Street.

One of the men then jumped off the back of the motorcycle and used a sledgehammer to smash the display window, before stealing jewellery from within.

He then jumped back on to the motorcycle and the pair drove off towards Blackfriars Road.

The driver of the motorcycle is described as wearing all black clothing and a black and white motorcycle helmet.

The second offender is described as wearing a black bomber jacket, an electric blue t-shirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and black trainers. He was also wearing a silver motorcycle helmet with red flame print.

Detective Inspector Brian Morley said: “This robbery occurred on one of the city centre’s busiest streets in broad daylight, so we are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact police as soon as possible.

“Fortunately no one was injured during this incident, but that takes nothing away from the severity of this crime.

“If anyone took any pictures or video on their mobile phones please contact us as a matter of urgency.

“Likewise, the men were driving a distinctive motorcycle and wearing distinctive helmets, so if anyone saw them drive away following the robbery we would very much like to know in which direction they were going.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 3221 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
