Oldham's 'old romantic' Dunn desperate to kickstart FA Cup run against Sheffield United

Oldham boss David Dunn says this weekend’s break from League One action is a chance for his side to stop the rot and embark on a morale-boosting FA Cup run.

Since Latics’ second round replay victory over Mansfield in mid-November the club have suffered three straight league defeats, and it later emerged that the staff had not been paid for a third consecutive month.

But Dunn says victory over fellow League One side Sheffield United at Bramall Lane could be just what his team needs to revive their turbulent season.

“There is no getting away from the fact that it has been a difficult time,” said Dunn.

“One thing we have got to do is focus on the football. That is something we can have an effect on – all the other stuff we can’t really affect.

“We have got to roll our sleeves up and hopefully we can stop the rot and put those three losses to bed. We have got to set our stall out and get a result there.

“I’m an old romantic, and the FA Cup is still really special. To be rewarded with a big tie in the third round would be a real lift for the club.”

The 35-year-old promised wholesale changes after last week’s 1-0 defeat to Crewe, with many of those to be forced through loan regulations.

Jay Fulton, Michael Higdon, and Richie Wellens will all miss out, while others will be given a chance to put their stamp on the side.

“There will be changes – that is for sure,” said Dunn.

“There are a few individuals that didn’t quite suit the formation the way we have been playing, but they will be back in.

“We need everyone on board, and hopefully we can change it round. It is my responsibility to send the fans away a little bit happier and that is what we intend to do.

“This pressure away from the league gives us a really opportunity to go to a really big ground and put a really good performance in.

“If we do that, it will stand us in good stead for the upcoming week.”
