Ex-Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr dropped into to famous Northern Quarter venue the Night and Day Cafe this week to film a music video for his new single Dynamo.

While at the legendary café, in Oldham Street, the Ardwick musician played a live set and took some press shots for his solo work.

The single is taken from the album Playland which was released last month to great acclaim from critics and fans alike.

Night and Day promoter Gareth Butterworth said: “He was amazing, but I am more of a Smith’s fan.

“He’s a bit more Rock n Roll than The Smiths were.”

The café was closed for the night as Johnny and his entourage took over leading fans of the venue to wonder why.

One Facebook fan, Andrea McGowan, posted on the star's wall: “Aaaaah wondered why it was closed today. If I'd have known you were inside I'd have snook in round the back.”

Melissa Roden, another Facebook fan, said: “Surely this is for Dynamo?! Absolutely love that one.”

Mr Butterworth said Johnny chose the venue as he is good friends with the venue and the owner.

He performed tracks from his new album Playland at Manchester’s Apollo last month, where he also serenaded newlyweds with The Smiths favourite There is a Light that Never Goes Out.

The iconic Night and Day Cafe which has hosted artists such as Arctic Monkeys and The Manic Street Preachers came under fire earlier this year when the council issued an abatement notice.

Mr Butterworth confirmed there had been no noise complaints during the guitarists set.
