Bury can’t be expected to win every game this season, says David Flitcroft

Bury manager David Flitcroft has said his side enjoy the challenge of being one of League Two’s standout sides – but can’t be expected to win every game.

The Shakers head the English fourth tier as they travel away to AFC Wimbledon this Saturday, having lost away at Exeter City the last time they were top.

But Flitcroft is adamant that his side will not be able to win every game this season and it is unrealistic to expect them to.

“I don’t know who thinks we’re going to win every game this season. They’re deluded, they’re unintelligent and it’s not going to happen,” he said.

“We’re in a really good vein of form; we get excited by the challenge of being one of the best teams in the league.

“At Exeter we made two mistakes and it cost us, we can only control our business and that’s what we’re looking to do.”

Since the Exeter defeat, Bury have won back to back games at the JD Stadium and Flitcroft will be hoping for a repeat of last year’s win away at Kingsmeadow.

He feels last year’s result will actually have little significance this weekend but is delighted that his side have their destiny in their own hands.

The Shakers have the task of containing man mountain Adebayo Akinfenwa, the Dons’ formidable striker renowned for his physical style.

Flitcroft is adamant that his defenders are up to the challenge and that he is not just focussing on Akinfenwa’s threat.

“Pablo Mills, Nults [Jimmy McNulty] and [Nathan] Cameron are three warriors; they’re the three best centre halves in the league,” said the former Barnsley boss.

“With Saturday in mind we rested Nults on Tuesday but he’ll have the all clear for Saturday – we made the right decision.”
