One Ed-‘in’, one Edin out? Manchester City’s Edin Dzeko can replace Edinson Cavani at Napoli, says Cannavaro

By John McDougall

Wantaway Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko is the man to replace Edinson Cavani at Napoli, according to Italian World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro.

The 27-year-old Bosnian scored 15 goals in 43 games for the Citizens last season but was frequently used as a substitute by ex-City manager Roberto Mancini.

And with Cavani’s impending move to Paris Sant-Germain, retired defender Cannavaro believes the Italian side should raid the Etihad Stadium for Dzeko.

“I think Dzeko could be the right choice,” said the 39-year-old. “Replacing Cavani is not going to be easy.

“When a player like Cavani leaves, after they have already lost Ezequiel Lavezzi last year, it is clear there will be great disappointment.

“These are signals that suggest you do not think about the future. The fans rightly want to win the league and the cup and always hope to achieve the best.”

Dzeko joined City in 2011 from German side Wolfsburg for a £27million transfer fee and was one of Mancini’s most expensive purchases.

The former Premier League champions have already sold strikers Mario Balotelli and Carlos Tevez to Italian giants AC Milan and Juventus respectively so far this year.

New City boss Manuel Pellegrini had Cavani in his sights, but French champions PSG look favourite to sign the Uruguayan after meeting his £54million release clause.

The Citizens have boosted their midfield options so far this summer, signing Spanish winger Jesus Navas and Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho for a combined £50million fee.
