Gang attack: Driver chased down on Mancunian Way in possible 'targeted attack'

A motorist was stabbed numerous times in the leg having been chased out of his car on a busy road by a gang in Manchester.

The incident occurred on Mancunian Way at the busy junction of Chester Road and Chorlton Road at around 2.55pm.

The victim of the attack, driving a silver Vauxhall Astra, was driving at high-speed pursued by another car before his car hit the kerb and came to a halt.

It is believed police are investigating whether the victim was known to his assailants, to try to establish if it was a targeted attack.

The 23-year-old Astra driver escaped his vehicle and ran off, but the occupants of the other car pulled over and ran after him, stabbing him twice in the leg before fleeing.

Detective Inspector Aidy Gallagher of Greater Manchester Police said: “A man is in hospital with stab wounds, but at this stage we believe they are not too serious.

“Earlier indications suggest this is not a road rage incident, but we are keeping an open mind about the exact circumstances.”

The occupants of the second car – a hatchback – are believed to be four men, aged between 25 and 35. One was black and three were Asian.

The slip road onto Chorlton Road, at the junction with Mancunian Way was closed for some time while the scene is examined, but all roads are now open.

Any witnesses or people with information are being asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
