Manchester City’s sporting director flies to Madrid in final bid to poach Pepe and bolster Blues’ back line

By Marios Papaloizou

Real Madrid’s central defender Pepe is still being hunted by Manchester City in a bid to bolster their back-line.

City have been heavily linked with the Portuguese star since Matija Nastasic sustained an injury during pre-season that will keep him out for up to six weeks.

Reports from Spanish newspaper Marca now suggest that City’s sporting director Txiki Begiristain has flown to Madrid to negotiate a deal before the transfer window closes.

Should negotiations be successful then the deal is likely to be worth somewhere in the region of £20-£30million and will see the Blues smash through the £100million mark for summer spending.

City boss Manuel Pellegrini has previously said that he is happy with his current squad; however, whether Joleon Lescott can provide adequate cover and competition in defence remains to be seen.
