Children must learn about same-sex relationships in school, demands open letter signed by Manchester’s LGF

Children must be taught about same-sex relationships in school, according to an open letter signed by a coalition of LGBT organisations and campaigners, including many from Manchester.

Manchester-based LGF (Lesbian and Gay Foundation) are supporting the proposal of an overall increase in the quality of Sex and Relationship Education (SRE), especially in areas focussing on the teaching of gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans and intersex relationships.

Issues were raised in the letter about the poor quality of education relating to LGBT relationships.

They claim this in turn feeds ignorance about the subject, as well as the mental and physical health problems faced by members of the community.

The letter explains that young LGBT people are at a greater risk of depression and suicidal thoughts, which can also lead to drink and drug use in later life. As well as the mental health aspect, there is the growing risk of health concerns such as HIV/AIDs.

The letter reads: “One in three gay men diagnosed with HIV in 2012 were in their teens or early 20s.

“85% of gay and bisexual men tell us they received no information about same-sex relationships in school.

“And for 14-19 year-old gay and bisexual men, pornography is the most popular source of information on how to have enjoyable sex, and the second most popular source on sexual relationships and attraction.”

Embarrassing Bodies’ Dr Christian Jessen, Conservative Peer Lord Normal Fowler and LGBT campaigner Peter Tatchell are amongst the people who signed the letter.
