Bee in the City! Manchester abuzz with winged sculptures until late September

This summer a hive of vibrant, super-sized worker bee sculptures has landed in Manchester for the biggest public art trail the city has ever seen.

The project was created by Wild in Art and Manchester City Council in order to bring you nine weeks of fun and fascination from July 23 – September 23.

Wild in Art celebrate their 10th anniversary this year and they believe that the Bee in the City project is a perfect commemoration of everything that is great about Manchester and its creativity.

101 bees have taken up new habitats across the city’s streets, parks and public spaces.

Meanwhile, colonies of little bees, designed by local primary school children, can be found in museums, galleries and shops across the city.

The event was inspired by the city’s heraldic worker bee, which is not only loved by locals, but well-known globally.

The region’s artists, communities and young people are at the heart of the project and have spent several months creating their own masterpieces to be displayed on the ‘canvases’.

Many of the designs are fun, however some make a serious point about the declining bee species and so Wild in Art are encouraging locals to the do their bit for the bees.

As well as creating a new and exciting buzz in the city, the project is supporting the We Love Manchester charity.

A fun way to raise money is a sponsored Bee hunt in the city. See how many bees you can spot in four hours and ask your friends and family to sponsor you. Don’t forget to take a selfie with each Bee and post them using #beeinthecity
