No points target for Bury's promotion push, says Flitcroft

No points target for Bury's promotion push, says Flitcroft

Bury manager David Flitcroft has not targeted a set number of points before the end of the season but insists his side are on course for promotion.

Wycombe Wanderers’ midweek win over sixth placed Luton Town means the Shakers are now four points behind the top three in the automatic race.

But Flitcroft insists League Two’s in-form side must concentrate on their own performances as they welcome Southend United to the JD Stadium.

“It’s about what we do, it’s how we affect the league table and we can’t rely on anyone else so we have to get our own house in order,” he said.

“The league is so unpredictable this season, usually at this time of the year you have a couple of dead rubbers but there isn’t this time.

“There are a lot of teams that can still get in the playoffs and there are a few teams vying for the top three spots because no one has run away with it.”

Bury have bolstered their squad for the run in, with Bolton Wanderers central defender Rob Holding joining on loan.

The 19-year-old is yet to make a first team appearance for the Trotters and will be eligible to feature for the Shakers if they make the playoffs.

And Flitcroft is hoping his new signing will add to competition in the squad but concedes that having a mental toughness may be as important as ability in the coming weeks.

“You review the character all season with the players that you bring in and see where they’re up to and you see what pressure means to them,” he added.

“If a player comes to my room they will get support, they come with an issue or want educating and that is something that I’ve been able to learn really quickly.

“And I’ve studied under one of the best in Keith Hill [Rochdale manager] who is a brilliant psychologist in his own right and I put a lot of those things into practice.”
