Manchester food redistribution charity celebrates anniversary

Four Manchester-based branches of the UK’s largest food redistribution charity are this month celebrating their anniversaries.

The Bread and Butter Thing (TBBT), a charity providing affordable food and stigma-free support to struggling communities, is celebrating its birthday at Gorton Library, Inspire, Newton Heath and Withington Library.

Operating alongside 158 other hubs across the country, the four Manchester-based branches opened their doors between 2017 and 2023 and have provided affordable, nutritious food for a combined total of more than 1,456 weeks.

Vic Harper, Chief Executive of TBBT, said: “Marking nine years in the Manchester community is something we’re incredibly proud of.

“We’ve seen how access to affordable, healthy food can bring people together, reduce waste and strengthen neighbourhoods. ”

She emphasised that none of the organisation’s work would have been possible without the commitment and dedication of the charity’s brilliant volunteers.

A member of the local community who uses the charity’s services said: “TBBT has taken the stress out of worrying about food and has done an amazing service for the community.

“They are life savers and I appreciate it so much.”

On a mission to help food budgets go further, the charity allows members to access up to three bags of food a week, from just £8.50.

The bags contain fresh fruit and vegetables, cupboard staples and chilled items, with personal hygiene items also readily available.

Service users have seen an uptick in both healthy eating and money saved; across TBBT’s network, 79% of members report eating more fruit and vegetables, and most members report an average saving of £25 a week.

The charity also successfully promotes community connection and addresses social isolation, with 72% of members saying that TBBT makes them feel more connected to the community.
