Carol Ann Duffy writes poem to mark Queen’s funeral

Creative Director of Manchester Metropolitan University’s writing school and former Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy has written a poem to mark the death of the Queen.

Born in Scotland, she was made Poet Laureate in 2009 – the first woman and openly gay person to hold the position.

The poem, “Daughter”, highlights the legacy of the monarchy, while humanising Elizabeth II as someone who once followed her own mother’s hearse: ‘You slowed and arrived with her, her only daughter,/ and only her daughter.’

Duffy lives in Manchester and is a professor of contemporary poetry at MMU.
