International Women’s Day is celebrated on 8th March – here’s how Manchester is marking the day

International Women’s Day was formed to recognise the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women and highlight issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women.

If you want to join in the celebrations and discuss ongoing issues, here are some events happening around Manchester.

IWD special by Yoga Social Club (see more here)

A yoga session with calming breathwork, slow flows and an uplifting meditation. Followed by a wine social and networking time. Plus live music from the Manchester String Quartet.

The organisers said: “We have created the ultimate wellness experience to celebrate what it is to be a woman in today’s society.”

The experience also includes a wellness goodybag!

IWD Walk for Women 2024 (see more here)

A community walk around the city centre to share your passion for equality and creating opportunities for Manchester women. 

Manchester City Council, who organised the event, said: “Bring along fun, safe and noisy instruments and make the most of your voice to join in with chants!”

Womb Health and Wealth (see more here)

Organised by CAHN (Caribbean & African Health Network CIC), enjoy a free day of activities centred on Black Women’s Womb Health and Wealth. 


The agenda includes workshops, guest speakers, lived experience testimonies, dinner, networking and cultural activities performances.

A fun and free workshop where you can learn to make beautiful corsages and rosettes! Organised by Stretford Stride.

Afternoon of Music and Research at The Gender-Based Violence Team (see more here)

A day of guest speakers, and opportunities for networking, organised by Global Perspectives, Marginalisation and Thriving Communities Research Cluster

IWD Cabaret at Lass Fest (see more here)

A cabaret evening hosted by Burlesque performer Ember Travixen. She is bringing a special spin on her ‘’Ember & the Vixens’’ show for IWD.

With circus elements, Selina Helliwell’s lavish show will transform the gorgeous cinema room into a night of female empowerment. With live music and an all-female cast.
