The Mary Wallopers – the latest hit band coming out of Ireland – are bringing their merrymaking live show to Manchester on November 11.
On the back of their new album “Irish Rock ‘n’ Roll” the band are preparing to capture a UK audience with their chaotic, humorous and exciting show on a huge winter tour.
The band was formed by two brothers Charles and Andrew Hendy and their friend Sean McKenna – who rose to fame during lockdown as they played live streams from their home studios.
Their style maintains its roots of Irish folk music – drawing inspiration from The Pogues and Dubliners – whilst still bringing a contemporary twist and mass appeal to a new generation of Irish Folk fans.
The new album perfectly encapsulates the emotion of traditional ballads whilst making comments on politics, sex and drink whilst giving a symbolic f you to the establishment.
A particular highlight from “Irish Rock ‘n’ Roll” is Wexford, a cover of legendary travelling songwriter, Pecker Dunnes which expertly grasps the struggles of Irish Travellers.
The song perfectly grasps the upbringing and struggles of travellers in Ireland and nods to the long history of Irish street singing.
Banjo player Andrew Hendy said: “It’s an incredible, emotional song. We’ve always gravitated towards that side of folk music – the most accessible side of music, the kind you can just stand on the street singing.
“Pecker Dunne wrote so many funny songs, which makes it even more hard hitting when he’d sing a song like this.”
