Masterchef winner Simon Wood and mentor John Torode to cook up treat at Bolton food fest

Masterchef champion Simon Wood will come face-to-face with his old master and mentor John Torode at the Bolton Food and Drink Festival.

Oldham-born Simon, who was crowned the 2015 winner of the hit BBC show in April, will be in Bolton on Sunday, August 30.

He will be cooking in the first show of the day – at 11am, in the celebrity chefs’ marquee in Victoria Square – against a fellow regional chef.

Celebrity chef and presenter Torode will reside over the “Great Bolton Menu” challenge, before cooking for the audience himself at 1pm and 3pm.

Simon said: “I’m really excited to be appearing at the Bolton food fest. The challenge I will be taking part in is a first for me so it will be interesting to see how it goes.

“Of course, I will be on stage with John Torode – I’m just hoping it’s not as stressful as the last time I was in the kitchen with him in the Masterchef final!”

Since winning Masterchef, Simon has been appointed executive chef of Oldham Athletic Football Club where he will be working across fine dining events in the club and offering master classes.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr Cliff Morris, said: “The beauty of Bolton Food and Drink Festival is that it attracts some of the hottest names on the chef circuit and to have this year’s Masterchef winner sharing his expertise is another coup.

“Shows like Masterchef attract a loyal following and it will be a real treat for fans to see Simon on stage with the show’s presenter, John Torode. He was a really popular winner and ticket-holders are in for a great show.”

Bolton Food and Drink Festival takes place from August 28 to 31. It is organised by Bolton Council, in association with Aldi, which is opening a state of the art distribution centre in the town later this year.

Tickets for the challenge are available from www.boltonfoodanddrinkfestival.com, via the Octagon theatre box office on Howell Croft South or by calling 01204 520661. The box office is open 9am to 7pm Monday to Saturday.
